100 Kids Activities to Do During Power Outage in Lamorinda California

PG&E sent a notification this morning stating that electrical power in Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda will be shut off beginning Sunday at 4:00 PM and will remain off until Wednesday morning. I'd like to share with you the following list of kids activities the Moraga school district shared.



All Students

  • Take a nature walk. What changes do you notice in nature?

  • Parent or student create a nature scavenger hunt.

  • Draw or paint

  • Board games

  • Puzzles

  • Bike ride

  • Write a book.  Write and draw a comic book.

  • Play school (with siblings, a pet or stuffed animals

  • Help a family member with a task

  • Build a fort in the bedroom 

  • Learn Morse code

  • Build a house of cards

  • Have a paper airplane contest

  • Learn the state capitals

  • Play “find it” geography games on maps or globes

  • Have an indoor camping trip (with a tent!)

  • Make a television out of box and put on shows

  • Learn some yoga poses

  • Play balloon volleyball

  • Make puppets and put on a show

  • Learn magic tricks

  • Learn the flags from around the world

  • Use masking or packing tape to play hopscotch on the floor

  • Write thank you notes or letters to family and friends

  • Choreograph a dance

  • Meditate

  • Practice mask wearing

  • Practice hand washing


TK-K

  • Read a story together and have your child draw a picture of their favorite part.

  • Flashlight reading partner (student reads with a stuffed animal)

  • Math

  • Practice writing numbers 1-10

  • Challenge - writing number 11 and up

  • Letters

  • Practice writing lowercase letters

  • Writing

  • Write a Halloween card (to your family members/friend)

  • Play a board game

  • Find 10 of three different items that start with the letter s sound

  • Make up a silly story

  • Sing some songs to your favorite stuffed animal or pet

  • Make a letter/card for your teacher


1st Grade

  • A great time to complete any incomplete assignments

  • Read for 30 minutes

  • Practice math facts with card games (War, Go Fish)

  • Use Fundations tiles to create 15 words

  • Make up a silly story

  • Share your story with a family member

  • Sing some songs to your favorite stuffed animal or pet

  • Make a letter/card for your teacher


2nd Grade

  • A great time to complete any incomplete assignments

  • Read for 40 minutes

  • Practice math facts with card games (War, Go Fish, etc...) 

  • Writing

  • Write a funny Halloween story

  • Write 2 word problems using subtraction

  • Use Fundations tiles to create 15 words

  • Pretend to be the teacher and teach a lesson

  • Make a letter/card for your teacher 

  • Make a building out of playing cards

  • Play board games (Yahtzee, Boggle, etc)


3rd Grade

  • A great time to complete any incomplete assignments

  • Read for 40 minutes and write a summary of what you read

  • Practice math facts

  • Card games card games (Multiplication War, Fraction War)

  • Write 4 Halloween themed math word problems

  • Writing

  • Write a Halloween story

  • Draw and send a letter and picture to a relative

  • Make a letter/card for your teacher

  • Create your own secret code

  • Make a building out of playing cards

  • Play board games


4th Grade

  • A great time to complete any incomplete assignments

  • Read for 40 minutes and write about one of the characters in the book. Why did you choose this particular character? What new information did you learn about this character?

  • Practice math facts

  • Card games card games

  • Practice your instrument or sing a song from chorus

  • Writing

  • Write a Halloween story

  • Make a letter/card for your teacher

  • Create your own secret code

  • Make a building out of playing cards

  • Play board games


5th Grade

  • A great time to complete any incomplete assignments

  • Write a script for a play

  • Practice your instrument or sing a song from chorus

6th-8th Grade

  • Read

  • A great time to complete any incomplete assignments

  • Improve personal bests: the mile, sit-ups, push-ups

  • Start a journal

  • Write a script for a play

  • Stargaze and look for the North star, the Big Dipper and constellations.

  • Write music or lyrics

  • Prepare an entire meal for the family

  • Create a new recipe

  • Make a letter/card for your teacher

  • Invent something and sketch it

  • Ask how the stock market works?  What a bond is...a treasury bill?

  • Create a visual of the three branches of government and show checks and balances

  • Decide on topic to debate, prepare and debate

  • Start writing an autobiography and write your future 

  • Compare food nutrition labels and organize by healthiest

  • Check or prepare home emergency supplies

  • Make a building out of playing cards
